Nantes

Historically the capital of the Duchy of Brittany, Nantes is today the capital of the administrative region of Pays de la Loire as well as the department of Loire-Atlantique. The sixth largest city in France, it was once an important port city, situated some 50 kilometres inland and connected to the Atlantic by River Loire. Its position on the delta of rivers Loire, Erdre and Sèvre to the west of France earned the city its nickname "La Venise de l'Ouest" . Today, Nantes is a modern and industrialised town, yet very much culturally linked to the Breton heritage. Its most famous son is the writer Jules Verne, who brought us "Around the World in 80 Days".

Weather
Nantes is a temperate city with oceanic climate. Summer in Nantes is generally mild, with temperatures not exceeding 25 °C and at a minimum of about 15 °C. The months of June, July and August are also usually the sunniest with the least rainfalls. In autumn, it remains mild with intermittent sunny days and cool nights. Winter in Nantes is rainy and can be very wet, although the rain is often followed by clear skies. Winter temperatures generally hovers between 5 °C to 10 °C. Occasional frosts may also occur. Spring remains cool in temperature until around May. The change in the weather in Nantes can happen suddenly, from sunny to rain and sunny again within minutes.

Sights and activities

  • The Château des Ducs de Bretagne, dated back to 13th century, was both a residential palace and a military fortress. Over time, the castle was constantly remodelled and very recently a major restoration was underway to return the site to its emblematic glory in the history of Nantes and Brittany. The doors to the castle was reopened in 2007 upon the completion of the restoration, and currently houses Musée d'Histoire de Nantes. The grounds of the castle, along with the ramparts, are free to visit on a daily basis except 1 January, 1 May, 1 November and 25 December. The Museum collections (permanent and temporary) are, however, ticket requiring. A standard ticket to either the permanent or the temporary collection is €5, while a combination ticket for both is €8.

  • Machines de l'Île (The Machines of the Isle of Nantes) hosts a number of mechanical animals including the Great Elephant which a ride can be taken. This giant mechanical elephant moves at a crawl of 250 metres per hour with a maximum of 49 passengers on board each time, with realistic flexes and movement, and the trunk will even spray water out every so often! Standard adult ticket is €6.50, and it includes the access to the terrace of l'Atelier de la Machine (the machine workshop) and to la Branche prototype de l'Arbre aux Hérons (the prototypic branch of the tree of herons).

  • La Tour LU is a rather "pink" and picturesque tower that stands by the entrance of the former factory of Lefèvre-Utile (LU) Biscuit Company. The unused factory was rescued from demolition in the late 1990's. The tower offers a vantage viewpoint of the city, while the factory has since been renamed Lieu Unique (Unique Place) and it is now used as a cultural centre.

Marseille

Marseille basks in the glory of its prime location along France's Mediterranean coast. Once a trading port in the ancient Greek empires, Marseille is now France's second largest city and the largest port in the Mediterranean. There are about 1.5 million people living in the urban area, just a little more in the bigger metropolitan area. Marseille has a lot to offer for the traveller. Enjoy the great museums and stunning churches. Or just take some time off and just relax on the beach. If looking for something more off the beaten track take a day trip to explore some of the nearby coastline, which is stunning and has great rock climbing.

Weather
It's almost the same like Nice because these towns are not far away. Summers last from June to September with temperatures around 30 °C and nights slightly below 20 °C. Winters have temperatures of around 12 °C during the day and a few degrees above zero at night.

Sights and activities

  • Notre-Dame de la Garde has a stunning basilica was designed in a Neo-Byrzantine style and sits on top of the singal hill of La Garde. The belfry is capped with a large gold gilded statue of the Virgin and Child, which is visible across the city and from several kilometers out to sea. The inside is decorated with marble, mosaics and murals.

  • The Museum of Old Marseille is located in a 16th century home, this museum describes the everyday life of the citizens of the city from the 18th century onwards.

    • Velodrome field is where Marseille Olympic soccer association plays her games. It's one of the best team in France. Indeed, they are champion 2010. This stadium is mythical in France, with modern installations and the architecture of stands is spectacular. We can visit the stadium and attend certain practices

    Nice

Nice has an exceptional location. Part of the French Riviera, Nice stretches along France's southeastern coast on the Mediterranean Sea. Enjoying a fine Mediterranean climate and a developed tourist infrastructure.

    Weather
Thanks to the tempering effect of the Mediterranean and the barrier of the Alps, Nice enjoys an exceptional climate all year round. Protected from the wind by the surrounding hills, Nice has very mild winters, with an average maximum temperatures of around 13-14 °C and nights around 6 °C. Summers are dry and warm with average highs of 27 °C in July and August and lows just below 20 °C in general. Summers see a few showers, though half of the annual precipitation of around 800 mm falls from October to January

    Sights and Activities
    ·  Place Masséna is the principle public square in Nice. Until the covering of the Paillon River the Pont Neuf, which runs in the square, was the only practicable road between the old and new town. The square was further dived in 1824 into North and South sections, and with the casino being demolished in 1979 the square has a much more open feel now. The square is bordered by red ochre buildings of an Italian design. This square is the site of many public concerts, summer festivals and parades. The Place Masséna is a short walk from many major sights around town.

    ·  Place Rossetti being located in the heart of the old town this square is a must see. Buildings in red and yellow ochres line the square and there is a stunning fountain in the center. During the day many vendors set up shops and sell icecream while at night the square can get very lively.

    ·  Sainte Jeanne d'Arc church - dedicated to Joan of Arc this modern church was built between 1926 to 1933. Built with with reinforced concrete the church has an Art Deco design, which contrasts greatly with traditional church designs in Europe. The interior paintings are also equally non traditional with a mixture of Russian Cubism and Orthodox icons.

    Discover France landscape

France is one of the western world's most important centres of cultured folks: names like Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Hector Berlioz, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, Victor Hugo and Claude Monet are but a handful of the many world-renowned composers, writers and artists that France has produced. It is little wonder the French are so proud of their culture, and sensational monuments such as the Eiffel Tower only emphasize French pride. But proud or not, you will be inclined to agree with the locals after exploring France's unlimited possibilities.
Of course, the capital Paris is travellers' favourite destination, particularly for a first-timer in France. Nonetheless, it pays to check out some other regions of the country too, such as Bretagne (Brittany) in the north and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in the south.
